A Towing Miracle
I believe we all can safely say that we enjoy the holiday spirits-whether it is Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Year's Eve. Most of us love the cozy environment, the big dinner gatherings, the holiday shenanigans and some decent heart to heart conversation with our loved ones. But let's face it, this too comes with a price. If we do host the festivities in our home, we have to run chores, pick up the relatives, get the groceries, clean the house etc. which could create a fuss, to say the least. If we travel to relatives, we have to get our backpack packed in time, if you have children you need to get them ready before you do, you have to decide what to wear, what gifts to give, what wine to pack etc. before all of us get to enjoy the holidays. No matter which category you fall into, things need to be almost perfect so that the holidays don't get ruined.
Last Christmas, I was planning to visit my Ma in Balzac during the Christmas holidays. I used to live near Castleridge Drive and it was only supposed to be a half-hour ride to her home. It was Christmas eve when we left the house, the snow had created a thin layer on the roads but we didn't mind them at first and headed towards our destination. After 10 mins or so, there was a heavy snowfall up until the point that I couldn't see. We stopped on the Queen Elizabeth Highway and fortunately found a coffee shop to have some hot drinks. The snow didn't stop for a few hours and we were stuck there for the whole time. When the snow did stop, we had to shove all the snow away and clear the road at first. As it turned out, that wasn't the hardest part of the day for us. Our car wouldn't start -no matter how much we tried and believe me when we say we tried. e wasted another half hour or so desperately hoping for a miracle. But as it turned out not everything works out like the movies.
Tired of it all, we looked for a towing company near Calgary to rescue us from this situation. We weren't sure if any of them were around. We decided to call our family friend in Castleridge who used to do heavy-duty towing and forklift towing. I had known him from high school when his father used to drive a small farming truck in downtown Calgary. Within 15 minutes and he fixed our car and blurted out jargon that we had no idea of and then we went our way. It was supposed to be a half-hour ride but it took us about 6-7 hours to reach my mom's home. When we got there, we were so hungry that we finished all of the food that was supposed to last till tomorrow and we had a good time talking to her, having a laugh and reminiscing old memories.
